Hi, I'm Kevin Samoei
Dad, Software Engineer, and learner
I currently work as a Senior Software Engineer at Settle. A unified platform that provides CPG brands with powerful payments, working capital, and inventory management.
Before that I worked at Netlify, where I helped build the future of the web, at Namely, where I helped build the HR platform for mid-sized companies, and at Andela, where I helped build the future of work.
I have 8 years of experience building web applications and I'm passionate about building products that make a difference. I mostly choose to work with companies because of the people I get to work with. That tops everything else. Technology is just a bonus. Problem being solved is the cherry on top.
I am starting this blog mostly so I can dive into technical topics that I find interesting and dig deeper into them. I also want to improve my writing skills(I suck at documentation). My goal is to write at least one post a month and to learn new things along the way.
My love-hate relationship with social media is another reason I'm starting this blog. I want to have a place where I can share my thoughts without the noise of social media. I want to bring back the old days of blogging where people shared their thoughts without the pressure of likes and retweets.
I promise to keep it real and to share my thoughts as they are. I'm not a writer so please bear with me as I learn how to write better. You will not find any clickbait titles here, or ads, or any other distractions. Trying to keep it clean and simple. PS: Still experimenting with fonts. I love reading, and a good typography makes reading even more enjoyable.
Tech
Mostly work on the Backend, however, I am one of those people who can do whatever needs to be done and I have done Frontend, Infra/DevOps, and Data Engineering in the past.
I love working with Go. I have worked with Ruby, Python, and JavaScript, Java, C# and C++ in the past. Languages aren't a big deal to me and I am always open to learning new ones. I enjoy data streaming and I have worked with Kafka, RabbitMQ, and Redis in the past. I have also worked with Docker, Kubernetes, and code as infrastructure tools like Terraform/Pulumi. Lot's of experience with AWS and GCP. I have worked with a lot of databases in the past but I mostly work with Postgres now.
I am a big fan of data and using data to make decisions. I enjoy creating metrics, dashboards and alerts to help with software reliability and to help with decision making.
Vim. I am a big fan of Vim. I use it for everything. I have tried to use other editors but I always come back to Vim. I am getting into Neovim now and I am loving it. Also Tmux. Tmux rules. Check out my GitHub to see what my dotfiles look like.
Family
I am a 29 year old husband to an amazing wife and a dad to two amazing kids. Ryan, who is 8 and Milan, who is 1. I love spending time with them and that is mostly the highlight of my day. Will share more about them in my posts about life.
Hobbies
I love reading, trying to get into fantasy books. I am into running now and I work out 6 days a week. I love movies and I spend time watching TV shows with my wife. I will share more about my hobbies in my posts about life.
